Monash UAS is a relatively young organisation, having been founded in 2011. The team was originally made up of 12 undergraduate final year engineering students from a number of disciplines including Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronics. The team set out to design and build an airframe capable of completing the Outback Search and Rescue Challenge in Kingaroy, Queensland.
Each of the students who were a part of the team completed final year project papers including research papers on various sections related to the team. The sum of all this research was to develop a custom built unmanned aerial vehicle as a platform to complete research and to compete in the Outback Search and Rescue Challenge.
