The team is deep in preparations for the second deliverable, due on the 18th of April. We have had two flight days near Kilmore, about an hour's drive from Melbourne. The Flying King fuselage has had some major work as the first flight resulted in a crash due to an error in the positioning of the centre of gravity. This issue has been overcome and the second flight day was very successful.
As we do not yet have a sufficiently qualified pilot Professor Hugh Blackburn is standing in and flying the plane - his excellent flying skills were the only thing which prevented our 'coincidence with ground level' problem from being more disastrous.
Last Sunday we successfully flew the Flying King fuselage with a new wing, and recorded the flight to contribute towards our D2 report. Unfortunately the drop mechanism was not yet flight ready, so we were unable to record a drop - we will be back in the air next weekend to get the required footage.
We would like to welcome Nuplex to the Monash UAS team. Nuplex is a key supplier of resins and fibreglass materials around the world. Their support of the team through providing composite materials is invaluable and we are very grateful.
